How can one phone number send callers to different paths or different AI agents based on what they say?
Build it in the agent's workflow.
- Start the workflow with the Inbound call trigger, or the Conversation started trigger, which covers all channels.
- To route on what the caller says, add a conversation step that asks, for example, how can I help you, do you have a question about an order or about a product, or do you want sales or support. Add a route for each answer. Every route creates a new branch (for example a catering order route and a menu question route), and you can have as many as you want.
- To route on data instead, use a Decision node (also called a condition node), for example state equals Florida, which gives you two paths.
- To keep topics in separate agents, each with its own knowledge, use the Forward to agent node, select the agent to send the caller to, and disconnect the default path. For example, one agent for an online store and another for a wellness center.
- To collect information along the way, use the Ask and Save node, which asks questions and saves the answers. You can follow it with an SMS step, for example to text a form link.
Forwarding to another agent also lets you switch persona at any point in a call. You can have one agent that acts as a coach, another that handles sales, another for role play, and a Spanish agent with a different voice, and forward the caller to whichever one fits.
